When it comes to brewing the perfect cup of coffee, the size of your grind matters more than you think. Whether you're a fan of a bold espresso shot or a smooth cold brew, the grind size can make or break your brew. In this guide, we'll help you choose the right grind size to match your favorite brewing method, ensuring maximum flavor with every cup.
Why does Coffee Grind size matter?
- Different coffee brewing techniques require different grind sizes.
- More surface area increase the extraction rate of the coffee grounds.
- Finer grinds reduce the water flow rate and increases contact time.
Types of Coffee Grind Sizes
Let’s start with the finest grind
Extra-fine Grind
If it’s powder you are looking for, go extra-fine grind. These grinds are normally made with Dark Roast Fair Beans, and best for brewing Turkish or Greek coffee.
See photo below for how these beans will look.
Fine Grind
This size is best suited for brewing espresso shots. The fine texture, similar to powdered sugar, creates fast extraction along with strong and creamy coffee. Crafting the best espresso shots is a science and art but any good espresso is ready for lattes and macchiatos. See photo below for how these beans will look.
Medium Grind
Also called drip grind, this size of grind works for drip coffee brewing methods such as automatic drip brewers, and pour overs. Medium grind allows water to seep through the coffee grounds extracting flavors while the grounds remain in the filter. Most “american” coffee is made this way.
Coarse Grind
Coarse grind is best suited for immersion methods for a slow extraction process: the coffee grounds are mixed with water and then coffee is poured out of the mixture. These methods include French Press, Chemex, and cold brewing. Cold brewing is becoming more popular due to it’s sweeter and less acidic coffee.
Best Choice of Personal Coffee Grinders
Burr grinders are the only choice we recommend. Some of them are automatic and some are available to grind by hand (definitely a way to feel more connected to the coffee extraction process.)Brew Fairly,
